On the final night of Christmas, as January's reality waited just beyond the door, Twelfth Night arrived with its own special enchantment. In grand houses across Britain, the last of the Christmas celebrations unfolded with mysterious traditions and ancient customs.
The Twelfth Night cake, rich with spiced pears and golden honey, filled the dining room with its warming fragrance. Winter herbs - rosemary for remembrance, thyme for courage - had been gathered from frost-covered gardens and woven into garlands that scented the air with their earthy wisdom.
This was the night when anything could happen, when the veil between seasons grew thin, when the magic of Christmas made its final, most potent appearance. Children searched for the bean in the cake that would make them king or queen of the revels, whilst adults savoured these last precious hours of holiday wonder.
